Whirlpool Sets Late-October Launch for Nugget-Ice Refrigerators

Whirlpool says its first refrigerators with in-door nugget ice are scheduled to become available starting in late October, adding a built-in alternative to countertop nugget-ice machines.

The company’s nugget-ice refrigerator page lists two 36-inch true-counter-depth models: the 3-door French door WRFC7436T and the 4-door French door WRMC7436T. Whirlpool says the in-door nugget ice maker holds up to 2.4 pounds of ice and can produce up to 15 pounds in 24 hours.

Why Nugget Ice Is Moving Into the Door

Nugget ice has become a feature shoppers often associate with restaurants, drive-thrus and dedicated countertop machines. Whirlpool is pitching the refrigerator version as a way to save counter space while keeping both nugget ice and cubed ice available from one appliance.

The page says the nugget-ice bin can be removed for scooping, and that the ice maker includes anti-clumping technology. Whirlpool also says the nugget-ice maker requires descaling every two years with proper use and care.

OLIPOP Offer Runs Through 2027

Whirlpool is also tying the launch to an OLIPOP promotion. The company says buyers can receive a free case of OLIPOP with the purchase of a Whirlpool Nugget Ice Refrigerator through Dec. 31, 2027, with redemption instructions included in the refrigerator setup packet.

The promotion is small compared with the appliance purchase, but it signals how brands are trying to market premium refrigerator features around beverage habits rather than only storage capacity, finish and door configuration.

What Shoppers Should Compare

Shoppers comparing built-in nugget ice with a countertop machine should look at capacity, cleaning requirements, repair access and the cost of tying a preferred ice feature to a full-size refrigerator purchase. Retailers should be prepared to explain the difference between nugget ice, crushed ice and standard cubed ice because consumers often use those terms interchangeably.
