There is no credible single “most reliable appliance brand” for every product category. Refrigerators, washers, dryers, dishwashers and ranges have different failure patterns, and published studies measure different things. For 2026, the strongest public evidence comes from J.D. Power’s national three-year owner-reported problem study and Yale Appliance’s regional first-year service data.

Power are its September 2025 study. Its July 2026 appliance study measures satisfaction, not reliability, and is discussed separately below.
How We Ranked the Evidence
J.D. Power’s 2025 U.S. Appliance Reliability & Service Study measures problems per 100 appliances, or PP100, among major appliances purchased within the previous one to three years. Lower is better. Yale Appliance calculates a first-year service rate by dividing appliances it serviced by appliances it sold; its 2026 brand analysis is based on 33,190 first-year service calls in Greater Boston, Cape Cod and southern New Hampshire. These measures are not directly interchangeable, so Appliance News does not combine them into a made-up composite score.
That distinction matters. A brand can perform very well in one category and only average in another, and Yale’s data reflects brands and models sold by one regional dealer. J.D. Power is broader geographically but covers only brands that meet its study criteria.

What 33,190 First-Year Service Calls Add
Yale Appliance’s 2026 all-brand analysis reported service rates below 10% for Speed Queen, LG, Miele, Sharp, Gaggenau, Bosch Benchmark, GE Profile, LG Studio, Bosch, Signature Kitchen Suite and GE Appliances. Speed Queen led Yale’s overall list at a 3.7% first-year service rate, with LG at 5.5% and Miele at 7.4%.
For dishwashers specifically, Yale tracked more than 7,000 units and reported Miele at 5.6%, Bosch Benchmark at 7.7%, Bosch at 7.8%, KitchenAid at 8.2%, GE at 8.9%, GE Profile at 10.3% and LG at 11.6%. The category average was 8.8%.
Best-Supported 2026 Shortlist
- Refrigerators: GE has the strongest current national reliability showing across all three refrigerator configurations measured by J.D. Power. Whirlpool also ranks near the top in side-by-side and French-door models.
- Dishwashers: KitchenAid, Bosch and GE are tightly grouped in J.D. Power’s national data; Yale’s first-year service data favors Miele and Bosch, with KitchenAid and GE also below or near its category average.
- Washers: GE leads J.D. Power’s current front- and top-load reliability rankings. Yale’s broader brand data also supports LG and Speed Queen as low-service brands, though the datasets cover different populations.
- Dryers: GE and Whirlpool lead J.D. Power’s current reliability table. Speed Queen’s strong Yale result is heavily influenced by its laundry focus.
- Cooking: GE, Frigidaire and Whirlpool have the lowest current J.D. Power problem rates among brands meeting study criteria.
Reliability Is Not the Same as Satisfaction
J.D. Power’s July 2026 satisfaction study surveyed 28,411 appliance evaluations and found different leaders: Samsung led satisfaction in French-door, side-by-side and top-freezer refrigerators; KitchenAid and Samsung tied for dishwasher satisfaction; Maytag led front-load washer satisfaction; LG led top-load washer satisfaction; and Samsung led dryer satisfaction. A customer can be highly satisfied with features and performance even if another brand has a lower measured problem rate, which is why the two studies should not be blended.
What to Check Before Buying
- Compare reliability for the specific appliance category, not just the badge on the door.
- Check who services the brand in your ZIP code before buying.
- Ask about parts availability and whether local independents can service the model.
- Consider simpler configurations when reliability is the priority; J.D. Power’s connected-appliance data shows a meaningful problem-rate gap.
- Read the exact model warranty, especially for refrigerator sealed systems and laundry drive components.
