LG Says Its Washer Motor Is Certified for 30 Years. What Does That Mean?

LG says the motor technology in its latest washers has been certified for up to 30 years of operation, a claim that sounds simple until shoppers ask what part of the washer is actually being certified.

In its IFA 2026 appliance announcement, LG said its Direct Drive Motor technology has received TÜV Rheinland certification for up to 30 years. The claim sits alongside new laundry, kitchen and built-in appliance products the company showed in Berlin.

Motor Life Is Not Washer Life

The most important distinction for consumers is that a motor certification is not the same thing as a 30-year warranty for the whole washing machine. A washer includes electronics, valves, pumps, bearings, seals, suspension parts, door locks, displays and software. Any of those can affect real-world ownership before the motor reaches the end of its tested life.

That does not make the claim meaningless. The motor is a major component, and direct-drive systems are central to how modern front-load washers control drum movement, vibration and cycle performance. But shoppers should not read one component claim as a promise that every other part will last three decades.

What Buyers Should Compare

Owners comparing washers should look at the written warranty, parts availability, local service coverage and repair history in addition to motor technology. A durable motor is most valuable when other wear parts can be repaired economically and when diagnostic support is available after the standard warranty period.

Retailers should explain the claim in plain language: LG is highlighting tested motor durability, not saying every washer will run maintenance-free for 30 years. That distinction protects customer expectations and reduces the chance of warranty confusion later.

Why It Matters for Repair

Long-life component claims can be useful if they push manufacturers toward more repairable designs. They are less useful if the component outlasts the machine but the owner cannot get affordable service for the electronics, seals or other parts that fail first.

The real test will come years after sale. A 30-year motor claim adds confidence only if the appliance remains serviceable, parts remain obtainable and LG’s support network can help owners keep the rest of the washer working around that motor.
