LG’s InstaView Refrigerator Passes 5.3 Million Global Sales After a Decade

LG’s InstaView refrigerator line has passed 5.3 million cumulative global sales, giving the company’s “knock twice, see inside” feature a decade-long run as one of the more durable design ideas in premium refrigeration.

The milestone comes 10 years after LG introduced the InstaView refrigerator in 2016. The company said the sales total is equivalent to roughly one unit sold every minute over the past decade, according to LG’s July 24 announcement.

The feature allows users to illuminate a glass refrigerator door panel by knocking twice, letting them see inside without opening the door. LG has promoted that combination of convenience, design and reduced cold-air loss as the core appeal of the product line.

For the appliance industry, the sales figure is more than a product milestone. It shows how a simple user-interface idea can remain commercially relevant even as refrigerator marketing shifts toward AI, food management, connectivity and energy performance.

North America Remains the Strongest Market

LG said North America is the strongest market for InstaView refrigerators, accounting for about 30% of cumulative global sales. The company also said the line has been well received in Europe, where consumers place high value on energy efficiency, sustainability and food preservation performance.

Sales are also rising in Asia and Latin America, according to LG, driven by growing demand for premium appliances. That global spread matters because premium refrigeration is no longer just a North American or Western European upgrade category.

The product’s staying power also reflects how refrigerator purchases are evaluated. Consumers are not only comparing cubic feet, finishes and ice makers. They are also weighing daily-use features that make the appliance feel more convenient in the kitchen.

A Feature That Became a Design Signal

InstaView’s appeal has always been easy to understand. A user knocks on the glass panel, the interior lights up, and the refrigerator contents become visible without opening the door.

That simplicity helped the feature stand out in a category where many innovations can feel technical or difficult to explain on a retail floor. For dealers, a feature that can be demonstrated in seconds has obvious sales value, especially in premium refrigerator displays.

LG said customer feedback has evolved over time. Early comments focused on convenience and reducing cold-air loss, while more recent reviews increasingly mention design, aesthetics and the everyday satisfaction of using the feature.

That shift is important. It suggests InstaView has moved from being a functional refrigerator feature to being part of the appliance’s design identity, similar to how through-the-door dispensers, flexible storage and counter-depth styling became recognizable selling points in earlier generations.

Innovation That Retailers Can Explain

Appliance manufacturers are adding more software-driven and AI-supported features to refrigerators, but those features can be harder to explain, demonstrate or connect to immediate household routines. InstaView’s sales milestone shows the value of a visible feature with a clear daily-use case.

For retailers, that matters on the sales floor. Shoppers may be intrigued by smart-home integration or food-management systems, but they often respond quickly to features they can see and test in the store.

For manufacturers, the lesson is not that every innovation needs to be simple. It is that the most durable features often solve a recognizable household problem while also improving the way the appliance looks and feels.

What the Milestone Says About Premium Refrigeration

LG said InstaView refrigerators have received recognition from global design and innovation programs, including Red Dot, iF, IDEA and CES Innovation Awards. Awards alone do not guarantee consumer adoption, but the 5.3 million sales milestone suggests the feature has translated into sustained demand.

The refrigerator category remains one of the most competitive and expensive parts of the appliance market. Premium models must justify higher prices through design, storage flexibility, energy performance, food preservation and ownership experience.

InstaView’s decade-long run gives LG a clear proof point as it continues building higher-end kitchen products around refrigeration, AI and connected-home features. It also gives appliance retailers a reminder that the strongest product stories are often the ones consumers can understand immediately.

As more brands push AI-driven appliance features, LG’s milestone shows that lasting innovation does not always begin with the most complex technology. Sometimes it starts with a kitchen habit as simple as wanting to know what is inside the refrigerator before opening the door.
